Nursing (AAS) - LPN to RN Bridge

The LPN Bridge Program provides another structured pathway for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to advance their education and become registered nurses (RNs) through North Central Michigan College (NCMC). The program is designed to build upon the knowledge and clinical skills already obtained in an approved practical nursing program.  

 

Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Registered Nurses. A nursing degree provides diverse opportunities for challenging jobs and advancement. Registered Nurses with an Associate of Applied Science degree are eligible to work in a variety of settings, including a hospital, extended care facility, home healthcare, and physician practice.

Successful completion of Summer Comprehensive Bridge Course NUR 199, ENG 111 English Composition and COM 170 Interpersonal Communication. (preferred) OR COM 111 Speech prior to starting NUR 200-level coursework. 

 

Program student learning outcomes from successful completion of this certificate include:  

  • Patient-Centered Care: The student will demonstrate nursing practices that acknowledge the dignity and worth of the individual and family through caring interventions within the interpersonal relationship.  
      

  • Safe Patient Care: The student will integrate critical thinking and evidence-based practice in providing safe, competent care to clients. 
      

  • Multidisciplinary Care and Teamwork: The student will participate in nursing and multidisciplinary teams to work collaboratively in the contemporary healthcare setting to achieve quality care. 
      

  • Patient Teaching: The student will demonstrate a teaching relationship with clients, which requires continuous learning, refining, and integrating professional behaviors and values. 
      

  • Accessing Information and Evaluating Outcomes: The student will demonstrate the ability to use informatics to evaluate patient outcomes and improve patient care. 
      

  • Accountability and Responsibility: The student will demonstrate evidence of preparation for clinical and direct patient care experiences. 

Prerequisites:  

  • Completion of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certificate program and a current, unencumbered LPN license obtained within the last three (3) years prior to entering the Bridge Program. 

  • If LPN program completion and/or state licensure occurred more than three years ago, the applicant must provide verification of 1,000 hours of LPN work experience within the past two (2) years, confirmed by their employer, prior to admission to the Bridge Program. 

  • Credit for Prior Learning (36 credits) will be awarded for the following courses-AH 232, BIO 235, BIO 236, BIO 242, NUR 104, NUR 111, NUR 151, and PSY 161-for students who have not already completed them. 

  • The AAS nursing curriculum is 75 credits, and a conditional acceptance into NUR 200-level coursework is dependent upon an 80% or higher in NUR 199. 

 

  • All general education requirements must be completed prior to the start of NUR 200-level coursework.
