The Associate of Arts with a concentration in Teacher Education prepares students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education, by providing a foundational introduction to the field of education. This program will provide students opportunities for applied learning and fieldwork in area schools. Graduates are also prepared to serve as instructional aides in pre-kindergarten-grade 3 elementary classrooms.  

Program Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Pedagogical Knowledge: Students demonstrate a knowledge of theories, methods, and best practices in teaching and learning, including differentiated instruction, assessment methods, and the use of technology in the classroom. They are familiar with current research and best practices in classroom management, including the use of positive behavior supports and strategies for building positive relationships with students and families. 
  2. Teaching and Learning: Students demonstrate the ability to plan and deliver effective lessons that engage and motivate students and align with state and national standards. They collect and analyze student assessment data and use results to inform planning and instruction. Students know a range of appropriate and effective instructional strategies and technology resources. 
  3. Family-Teacher Partnerships and Community Connections: Students demonstrate an understanding of the role of family and community organizations in supporting student learning, and the ability to collaborate with these groups to support student success. 
  4. Developmentally, Culturally, and Linguistically Appropriate Teaching Practices: Students demonstrate an awareness of the impacts that cultural diversity and equity have in the classroom, and the ability to modify instruction to meet the diverse needs of all students. They demonstrate an understanding of child development and the importance of creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all students, including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities. 
  5. Professionalism as an Educator: Students understand the importance of reflection and continuous professional growth, including ongoing self-assessment and the development of a professional growth plan. They have knowledge of the ethical and legal requirements of the teaching profession including the principles of confidentiality. 

MICHIGAN TRANSFER AGREEMENT REQUIREMENTS:


A student must successfully complete at least 30 credits, with at least a 2.0 in each course, to fulfill the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA).

Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) Requirements

  • 1 Course in English Composition
  • A second course in English Composition or 1 course in Communications
  • 1 Course in Mathematics
  • 2 Courses in Social Sciences (from two disciplines)
  • 2 Courses in Humanities and Fine Arts (from two disciplines excluding studio and performance classes)
  • 2 Courses in Natural Sciences including one with laboratory experience (from two disciplines)

General Education Requirements: 38-44 Credit Hours


Program Electives: 3-4 Credit Hours
